ASPPH welcomes five new participants to our Fellowship Programs. Two new ASPPH Fellows began their assignments with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and three new ASPPH Fellows began their assignments with a division of the U.S. Department of Transportation, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Both these prestigious fellowship programs offer applied public health training opportunities for recent graduates of ASPPH member, Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH)-Accredited schools and programs of public health. During the next one to two years, fellows will train under the guidance of mentors within their host federal agencies.

The ASPPH/EPA Environmental Health Fellowship Program offers outstanding opportunities for early-career public health professionals by enabling them to train at EPA on high-priority environmental, public health issues.  ASPPH/EPA Fellows work closely with nationally recognized experts within the premier environmental health agency in the world. EPA leads the nation’s environmental science, research, education and assessment efforts, while working to protect our health and our environment.

The ASPPH/NHTSA Public Health Fellowship Program offers excellent training opportunities aimed at strengthening the public health workforce and the linkages between public health, traffic safety, and injury prevention. It also provides opportunities for early-career public health professionals to acquire and practice the skills needed to perform essential public health services as they pertain to traffic safety specifically, and public health in general.  NHTSA promotes and implements effective educational, engineering, and enforcement programs to prevent injuries and deaths and reduce economic costs associated with motor vehicle crashes on the nation’s roadways.

The 2017 – 2018 ASPPH/EPA Environmental Health Fellows are:

• Ms. Rachel Long, graduate of the University of North Carolina Gillings School of Global Public Health, will be based in the Office of Air and Radiation in Washington, DC.
• Ms. Danielle Ramos,  graduate of the University of Southern California Programs in Public Health, will be based in the Office of Children’s Health Protection in Washington, DC.

The 2017 – 2018 ASPPH/NHTSA Public Health Fellows are:

• Ms. Melissa Daily, graduate of the University of Michigan School of Public Health, will be based in the Occupant Protection Division in Washington, DC.
• Ms. Leah Reish, graduate of the University of Memphis School of Public Health, will be based in the Impaired Driving Division in Washington, DC.
• Ms. Nandi Taylor, graduate of the University of Kansas School of Medicine KU – MPH Program, will be based in the Office of Behavioral Safety Research in Washington, DC.

This week, the new ASPPH Fellows participated in a variety of welcome and introduction sessions by ASPPH and their host agencies, in addition to skill-building trainings on developing goals and objectives, and understanding the legislative process.
