Columbia Faculty Member Named to Editorial Board of New Open Access Journal

Dr. Renata Schiavo, senior lecturer in Sociomedical Sciences at the Mailman School of Public Health, was named to the editorial board of Health Equity, a new open-access peer reviewed journal published by Mary Ann Liebert, Inc. Health Equity is supported by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.

Dr. Schiavo’s professional interests are at the intersection of health, equity, and development, and cut across different areas including health systems strengthening, health equity, community health, community and patient engagement, strategy design, risk communication, and communication for behavioral, social and organizational change.  Her recent work focuses on health equity/health disparities, maternal and child health, chronic malnutrition, and epidemics and emerging diseases, among others. She is founding president, board of directors, of Health Equity Initiative; editor-in-chief of the Journal of Communication in Healthcare: Strategies, Media, and Engagement in Global Health; and principal, Strategic Communication Resources. Dr. Schiavo was recognized as one of 300 Women Leaders in Global Health (2015) by an initiative of the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, is an elected Fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine, member of the Steering Committee of the APHA Public Health Education and Health Promotion Communication Working Group, member of the APHA International Health sections and co-chair, special sessions, APHA Global Public Health Film Festival. She is the author of the book Health Communication: From Theory to Practice (San Francisco: Jossey Bass/Wiley), now in its second edition, and more than 30 publications in the public health, health communication, healthcare, and global health fields.
