Columbia Graduate Wins American College of Epidemiology Award

Dr. Bianca Malcolm, a 2013 graduate of the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health, has been awarded first prize by the American College of Epidemiology (ACE) for the 2013 Student Prize Paper competition. Her research on “The spatiotemporal characteristics of seasonal influenza in the United States, 1968-2008” showed that seasonal influenza in the U.S. follows a southern-travelling wave over a 7-month period, and its timing and direction is influenced by the dominant subtype of circulating strains. While a doctoral student in the department of epidemiology, Dr. Malcolm was especially interested in understanding the movement of infectious diseases and how to model that process, and she developed new methodologies for doing this.
