Dr. C Mary Schooling, professor at CUNY School of Public Health, is one of 10 recipients of the 2013 American Journal of Epidemiology papers of the year. The award-winning paper clarifies that Mendelian Randomization studies are complimentary to randomized controlled trials, because randomized controlled trials assess whether an intervention works, but not necessarily the mechanism by which the intervention works, whereas a Mendelian Randomization study assesses whether a particular mechanistic pathway is causal.
