Dr. James Greenberg, professor with the CUNY School of Public Health at Brooklyn College, is the lead author on a paper published in Obesity (Silver Spring), “Chocolate-candy consumption and 3-year weight gain among postmenopausal U.S. women.” This prospective cohort study tested the hypothesis that greater chocolate-candy intake is associated with more weight gain in post-menopausal women. Utilizing data from the Women’s Health Initiative, they compared women eating one ounce of chocolate less than once a month, once a month to less than once a week, once a week to less than three times a week and three or more times a week. There was a statistically significant linear trend for increased greater prospective weight gain in this cohort of postmenopausal women.
