Driver distraction is a recognized major cause of impaired performance and motor vehicle collisions, with some studies suggesting that drivers of passenger vehicles may be distracted nearly 33 percent of the time spent behind the wheel. With public safety concerns in mind, Dr. Russell L. Griffin, assistant professor in the Department of Epidemiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) – along with department colleagues Ms. Carrie Huisingh, doctoral student, and Dr. Gerald McGwin, professor and vice chair – recently examined the prevalence of distraction specifically among public transit bus drivers.
