Dr. Craig Newschaffer, professor in the department of epidemiology and biostatistics and director of the A.J. Drexel Autism Institute, and Ms. Lindsay Lawer, senior manager of the A.J. Drexel Autism Institute and DrPH candidate in the department of health management and policy, are coauthors of an article titled “Does a claims diagnosis of autism mean a true case?” published online ahead of print in June in Autism. The purpose of the study was to validate autism spectrum disorder cases identified through claims-based case identification algorithms against a clinical review of medical charts. Charts were reviewed for 432 children, and their findings suggest that such an algorithm is a valid means to identify true autism spectrum disorder cases in claims data.
