A recently released study by researchers at the George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services examines the allocation of graduate medical education (GME) program funding. Since its start, the Medicare GME program has paid teaching hospitals to provide residency training for young physicians. Dr. Fitzhugh Mullan, the Murdock Head Professor of Medicine and Health Policy, a joint position at School of Public Health and Health Services and the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, served as lead author on the study which found that New York state received 20 percent of all Medicare’s GME funding while 29 states, including places struggling with a severe shortage of physicians, got less than one percent.
