Dr. Christopher Atchison, associate dean for public health practice at the University of Iowa College of Public Health, has been selected to chair the Member Engagement Workgroup which will advise the Iowa Department of Human Services regarding implementation of the Iowa Health and Wellness Plan, the state’s recently enacted compromise to expand Medicaid coverage under the federal Affordable Care Act. The new plan, which will cover all Iowans age 19-64 with incomes under 138 percent of the federal poverty level, offers a comprehensive benefit package and provider network, and includes efforts to help improve the health of enrollees by encouraging personal responsibility for healthy choices and lifestyles. The Member Engagement Workgroup will convene meetings with organizations including consumers to discuss the current system, new design plans, what barriers need to be addressed and how the new system can address those barriers.
