Dr. Ty Borders, professor and chair of the department of health management and policy in the UK College of Public Health, has been invited to serve on the National Advisory Committee on Rural Health and Human Services for a four-year term.  The Committee, a part of the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), is a 21-member panel of nationally recognized experts in the area of rural health.  The group provides recommendations to the U.S. Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services on issues of particular interest and impact in rural health.

The Committee was created in 1987 with the charge to advise the Secretary of Health and Human Services on solutions to key health care problems in rural America.  The Committee’s current membership reflects a wide-range of expertise in matters of particular importance to rural parts of the country, with members involved in medicine, nursing, public health, administration, finance, law, research, business, and human service issues.

“This appointment is an honor not only for Dr. Borders and his family, but also for Kentucky,” stated  Congressman Andy Barr, United States Representative for Kentucky’s sixth Congressional District.  “Dr. Borders possesses a broad and deep understanding of the health care challenges facing rural Kentucky and America.  His unique insight about evidence-based strategies that could improve rural health and health care delivery will greatly benefit the committee.”

Dr. Borders’ term on the National Advisory Committee on Rural Health and Human Services began this spring and will continue until April, 2019.  The Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky Endowed Chair in Rural Health Policy, Dr. Borders also serves as editor of The Journal of Rural Health.
