Apparent treatment resistant hypertension (aTRH) is defined as uncontrolled hypertension despite the use of three or more antihypertensive medication classes or controlled hypertension while treated with four or more antihypertensive medication classes. Dr. Ryan Irvin, assistant professor in the department of epidemiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham – along with department colleagues Mr. John N. Booth III, student assistant, and Dr. Paul Muntner, professor, in addition to Dr. George Howard, professor in the department of biostatistics; Dr. Monika M. Safford, professor in the division of preventive medicine; and Drs. Suzanne Oparil and David A. Calhoun, professors in the division of cardiovascular disease – evaluated the association of aTRH with incident stroke, coronary heart disease (CHD), and all-cause mortality.
