Loma Linda Researchers Reflect on Community-Based Participatory Research

In a recent study out of Loma Linda University School of Public Health regarding the effects of exposure to emissions from a rail yard on a community, researchers utilized community-based participatory research (CBPR) in order to allow meaningful community interaction with the study and to address institutional review board (IRB) requirements. A reflection was published in the summer issue of Progress in Community Health Partnerships: Research, Education, and Action.

“As CBPR expands and researchers engage more actively with the community, universities need to be prepared to provide community-friendly ethical training for human studies research that will further support CBPR partnerships,” said Dr. Rhonda Spencer-Hwang, lead author of the study.

“Making Human Subject Protection Training Community Responsive: Experiences Delivering on the Community-Based Participatory Research Promise” is available to read in the summer issue of Progress in Community Health Partnerships: Research, Education, and Action or can be viewed on PubMed here http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25152103.
