Dr. Eden V. Wells, clinical associate professor at the Michigan School of Public Health, has been named Chief Medical Executive of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS). Wells will serve Michigan citizens by providing professional medical leadership, expertise and coordination in addressing public health issues, workforce issues, and health policy development.

Dr. Wells joins a long line of faculty who have provided service to the State of Michigan,” said University of Michigan School of Public Health Dean Martin Philbert. “By working together and across platforms, the School of Public Health and Michigan’s Department of Health and Human Services each mutually benefit, as do the residents of our state.”

Dr. Wells will continue to teach applied epidemiology and to serve as director of the School’s Preventive Medicine Residency Program.

Dr. Wells was previously with the Bureau of Epidemiology at MDCH, serving as a medical consultant to the Bureau and as a medical epidemiologist. During her former time with the department, her activities included investigation of and response to public health incidents and outbreaks, as well as preparedness planning for potential bioterrorism and pandemic influenza events.

Dr. Wells completed medical school the Ohio State University College of Medicine, internal medicine training at Vanderbilt University Hospitals, and a preventive medicine residency at the University of Michigan, School of Public Health. She is board-certified in both internal medicine and preventive medicine. In 2013, she was named a fellow of the American College of Preventive Medicine.
