Michigan Launches Center for Technology Development to Aid Teens with Disabilities

The University of Michigan School of Public Health, in conjunction with the departments of physical medicine and rehabilitation, internal medicine, College of Engineering, College of Pharmacy, and the School of Information have begun collaborative work that will develop technology-based approaches to improve the health of teens and young adults with physical, cognitive, and neurodevelopmental disabilities. A five year, $4.5 million federal grant from the U.S. Department of Education’s National Institute of Disability and Rehabilitation Research will help launch the new Rehabilitation Engineering and Research Center. Researchers will explore how technology can be used to implement innovative types of support to those with disabilities. Support may range from tracking and navigating daily activities to motivating people to pursue goals.
