Michigan: Millions of Lives Saved since Surgeon General’s Tobacco Warning 50 Years Ago

An estimated eight million lives have been saved in the United States as a result of smoking restrictions that began 50 years ago this month. A new study, authored by three University of Michigan Public Health researchers and their colleagues at Yale University, used mathematical models to calculate the long-term effect of the report and the anti-smoking measures that followed. Their results are published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
