Dr. Christy Harris Lemak, associate professor of health management and policy, along with her colleagues from the University of Michigan School of Public Health, have found that physicians in Michigan supported the Physician Group Incentive Program by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. This program encouraged doctors to collaborate to develop a vision for improving primary care, and to work to achieve it. The program, encompassing 17,500 doctors from 40 organizations in Michigan, or 71 percent of active primary care physicians and 56 percent of specialties, has had a positive impact on both cost and quality of healthcare in Michigan.
