The Association of University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA) has selected University of Michigan SPH Dr. Richard Lichtenstein, S. J. Axelrod Collegiate Professor of Health Management and Policy, to be the 2015 recipient of the Gary L. Filerman Prize for Educational Leadership. The prize recognizes individuals from AUPHA member programs who have made outstanding contributions over their careers to the field of health administration education, who have exhibited leadership in the field, and who have enriched their institutions, their students, and health administration education through their work. Dr. Lichtenstein is founder and director of U-M’s Summer Enrichment Program in Health Management, an internship program for undergraduate students interested in eliminating health disparities. He started the program in 1986; 566 students have participated to date, many of whom have gone on to obtain graduate degrees in health management and policy at the University of Michigan and other schools. Others have succeeded in different areas of public health, medicine, business, education, law, and public policy. Several are now in leadership positions in health and health care organizations, and 20 have either obtained a doctoral degree (PhD or DrPH) or are currently enrolled in a doctoral program.
