New York Academy of Medicine Honors Columbia Professor

Dr. Jeremiah Barondess, NYAM president emeritus and Mailman School of Public Health professor of clinical epidemiology, was honored at the New York Academy of Medicine’s twentieth annual gala where he received the Urban Health Champion Award for his leadership and long tenure as the Academy’s first full time President. During his presidency, Dr. Barondess established NYAM’s profile and thought leadership in urban health. He launched the Center for Urban Epidemiologic Studies, which conducted research on HIV/AIDS and other critical health issues, and the Journal of Urban Health, which remains an important publication in epidemiology and public health.

“He is in fact the prototype of a gentleman and a scholar. He is a doctor’s doctor, a teacher’s teacher, and he’s a dear friend to me,” said Dr. George Thibault, interim chair of the NYAM Board of Trustees.

Dr. Barondess reflected on his work as President of NYAM: “Although health challenges of almost every kind are concentrated in cities, and although the deep determinants of health and disease and disparities lie primarily in the social circumstances of people and are most glaring in cities, there was no sense of urban health as a community of effort, or a field of inquiry, or of application, or of scholarship, or of policy. And so we undertook to do that and to define all that as a field.”
