The Advanced Certificate in Public Health, offered by NYU, is a 15 credit course administered in an online format. The certificate will prepare students to take the Certified in Public Health (CPH) exam. The Certificate of Public Health will be modeled along the core competencies of the NYU Master of Public Health Degree following the Core Competency Model of the Association of Schools and Programs in Public Health (ASPPH). The certificate program includes five core areas of study: biostatistics, epidemiology, environmental health, health care policy and management, and socio-behavioral determinants of health. Courses may be undertaken at any pace for no more than a maximum of three years. All courses will be available and administered during fall, spring, and summer semesters.

Public health professionals in local departments of health and other public health related agencies will qualify for the Certified in Public Health (CPH) credential once that successfully complete the five public health core courses and meet the criteria of either five years’ experience or a graduate degree. These workers will most likely be employed full time as well as have personal and family obligations. Providing an online format for the completion of the five courses will allow for a flexible, independent learning environment that can be adapted into the students’ lifestyle. Traditional on-site environments require the students to be available on certain days of the week, one or more times per week, at set times of the day and student need to allow time to travel to and from the institution. Once a student completes the five courses they will have access to a self-paced review course to assist them in preparing for the CPH exam.

Students enrolled in the program will be able to conduct all the aspects of their studies online including registration and interacting with faculty; there is no requirement for travel to any of the NYU campuses. As an NYU student enrolled in this certificate program the student will be part of an online community with faculty and fellow students as well as part of the NYU community at large. All courses are taught by NYU GIPH faculty who also teach the traditional in classroom courses. They are available to certificate students for guidance and advisement.  The program uses NYU’s state-of-the-art platform, NYU Classes, designed around various technology enhanced educational tools allowing for the delivery of high quality, flexible and uniform courses.
