Obesity and Vehicle Type as Risk Factors in Collision Injury Studied by UAB

A recent study led by Mr. John P. Donnelly, fellow/graduate student trainee in the department of emergency medicine and the Center for Outcomes and Effectiveness Research and Education at the University of Alabama at Birmingham – in collaboration with Dr. Gerald McGwin, professor and vice chair, Dr. Russell L. Griffin, assistant professor, and Dr. Nalini Sathiakumar, professor, in the department of epidemiology – sought to describe variations in the risk of motor vehicle collision (MVC) injury and death by occupant body mass index (BMI), class, and vehicle type. The team hypothesized that the relationship between BMI and the risk of MVC injury or mortality would be modified by vehicle type.
