Dr. Patrick Clifford, associate dean for research and professor in the department of health education and behavioral science at Rutgers School of Public Health, was appointed to serve on the Clinical, Treatment and Health Services Research Review Subcommittee of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) Initial Review Group (AA-3), at the National Institutes of Health. NIAAA leads the national effort to reduce alcohol-related problems by conducting and supporting alcohol-related research and work; as well as translating and disseminating research findings to health care providers, researchers, policymakers, and the public.

The recipient of several federal, state, and foundation grants, Dr. Clifford’s research centers on methodological and clinical issues affecting alcohol use disorders (AUD) treatment outcomes research.  Through research, Dr. Clifford has shown that participation in research assessment protocols has clinical efficacy and can alter the course of AUD treatment effects.  In addition, Dr. Clifford’s research examines AUD clinical course and the factors that can affect treatment outcome trajectories. His research has contributed to the AUD treatment outcomes research literature and has clinical, theoretical and methodological importance.

Dr. Clifford has published more than 50 manuscripts in professional journals and has served on several grant review panels for the National Institutes of Health. He is assistant editor of Addiction and previously served as Consulting Editor of Psychology and Addictive Behaviors.
