In the nation's first study to examine levels of objectively measured moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) by sex and urbanicity, researchers from the Arnold School of Public Health found no differences in MVPA among boys by level of urbanicity. However, girls living in rural areas were more active than suburban/urban girls. The research team, led by Dr. Justin B. Moore of the University of South Carolina Arnold School of Public Health’s department of health promotion, education, and behavior, in partnership with the North Carolina Division of Public Health, compared objectively measured physical activity across the rural-urban continuum in a sample of fourth- to eighth-grade youth.
