Spring 2017 IPEC Institute on Interprofessional Education Recap

The 12th Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) Spring 2017 Institute, entitled Interprofessional Education: Building a Framework for Collaboration, ran May 3-5 in Washington, DC and featured Dr. Barbara Brandt, director, National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education and associate vice president for education, Academic Health Center, University of Minnesota, as the keynote speaker.  Representing public health at the institute, Dr. Dora Anne Mills and Dr. Sherril B. Gelmon presented on separate “theory burst” topics.  Dr. Mills, vice president for clinical affairs at the University of New England, presented on Building Learning upon IPEC’s Core Competencies. Dr. Gelmon, professor of public health and director of the PhD in Health Systems & Policy Program at the Oregon Health & Sciences University-Portland State University School of Public Health, spoke on Assessing Learners and Evaluating Your Program.

IPEC hosted its first poster contest at the institute with fifteen of the 23 institute teams competing. The inaugural IPEC Best Poster Award went to the SUNY Upstate Medical University team for “Embedding Interprofessional Education into a Learning Experience: Creating Twelve Tips.”  As the poster’s related manuscript is still under review, their poster is not available for viewing online with the other posters in iCollaborative, but will be included on the site in the future.

The next IPEC institute, focused on a special advanced IPE topicis set for October 18-20 in Long Beach, CA. General registration will open on May 31. Stay tuned for details in this space or send an email to Ms. Liz Weist at eweist@aspph.org to get connected with IPE activities undertaken by ASPPH.
