A new study led by researchers from the University of Maryland School of Public Health and the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health shows that nearly two-thirds of young children in low- and middle-income countries can identify cigarette brand logos. Dr. Dina Borzekowski, research professor in the department of behavioral and community health at the Bloomberg School of Public Health, led the study, which was co-authored by Dr. Joanna Cohen, director of the Johns Hopkins Institute for Global Tobacco Control, and published in Pediatrics. The study surveyed five- and six-year-olds in Brazil, China, India, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Russia, the low- and middle-income countries with the highest number of adult smokers. Among the 2,423 children surveyed, 68 percent could identify at least one cigarette brand logo.
