The Center for Health Workforce Studies at the University at Albany School of Public Health recently released the report Graduate Medical Education in New York: Nation’s Largest Supplier of Physicians.  Based on analysis recently conducted at the Center, the study quantified the contribution of New York’s graduate medical education (GME) programs to the nation’s supply of physicians. According to the study, 17 percent of the nation’s physicians completed residency training in New York, making it the nation’s largest supplier of physicians out of any state in the country. In 17 states outside of New York, more than 10 percent of the active physicians completed GME training in New York. The Center also assessed geographic variation in the distribution of physicians who trained in New York. They found that in New England, more than 17 percent of active physicians completed GME in New York compared to 13 percent of physicians in the South Atlantic region.
