Almost half of the world's population uses solid fuel for cooking, exposing women to high levels of particulate pollution in indoor air. Dr. Nalini Sathiakumar, professor in the department of epidemiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham – in collaboration with an international team of scientists from Aga Khan University in Pakistan, the University of Southampton in the U.K., and King Saud University in Saudi Arabia – assessed the risk of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) among rural women, according to their use of solid fuel.
