UAB Professor Earns AIHA John Palassis Memorial Award

Dr. Elizabeth H. Maples, assistant professor in the department of environmental health sciences and deputy director of the Deep South Center for Occupational Health and Safety at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, was recently honored at the AIHce 2014 conference with the John Palassis Memorial Award, which is named for a former American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) member who produced significant impact in the field of industrial hygiene through worker training, outreach to small businesses, and the development of consistent and comprehensive safety and health program standards. The award was presented to Dr. Maples by the AIHA Communication and Training Methods Committee for her contribution to the committee’s mission to “provide a forum for discussion and recommendations on methods for education, training, and communicating with employees, employers, and the community about occupational and environmental health risks and allied topics.” Dr. Maples is currently an Alabama Local AIHA section director.

Dr. Maple’s primary research interests involve the reduction of work-related injuries and illnesses through effective training programs. She has significant experience in designing, implementing, and evaluating occupational health and safety training programs. She is also interested in expanding the capacity of environmental public health practitioners in working within communities to address environmental health problems, such as noise pollution.
