Ms. Ameena Matthews, violence interrupter for the University of Illinois at Chicago School of Public Health’s anti-violence program Cure Violence, was honored with the Community Activist Award at the BLACK GIRLS ROCK! event, which aired on BET Networks on November 3, 2013. Ms. Matthews is one of three violence interrupters showcased in the critically acclaimed documentary The Interrupters. The 2011 film from acclaimed director Steve James and bestselling author M. Alex Kotlowitz, recently won the Emmy for “Outstanding Informational Programming – Long Form.”
