UMass Amherst Finds Multiple Factors Combine To Cause Hearing Problems in Middle Age

Results from a recent study of hearing in middle-aged and older adults conducted by Dr. Karen Helfer, associate professor of communication disorders at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst School of Public Health and Health Sciences, suggest that hearing loss is not the only factor playing a role as people experience age-related speech comprehension problems. Instead, declines in cognitive skills, particularly memory and processing speed, also contribute.
