UNC Finds Pollutants from Burning Incense Cause Inflammatory Response in Human Lungs

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Gillings School of Global Public Health researchers have examined incense as a source of indoor air pollution in the Arabian Gulf Peninsula and found that the common practice causes an inflammatory response in the cells of people exposed to its smoke and gaseous combustion products. Ms. Rebecca Cohen, master's student in environmental sciences and engineering (ESE), her adviser, Dr. Kenneth G. Sexton, now retired ESE research assistant professor; and Dr. Karin B. Yeatts, research assistant professor of epidemiology, co-authored the study, which appears in the August 2013 issue of Science of the Total Environment.
