Dr. Victor Schoenbach, associate professor of epidemiology (retired) at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, has won the American College of Epidemiology’s (ACE’s) Abraham Lilienfeld Award.

Dr. Schoenbach was recognized at the ACE annual meeting, held September 23-25, in Cincinnati.

The award is presented to a senior leader who has made extraordinary contributions to the field of epidemiology over the course of his or her career, through teaching, mentoring, research and/or scholarship.

“This is a well-deserved recognition of Vic’s outstanding lifetime contributions to epidemiology,” said Dr. Til Stürmer, Nancy A. Dreyer Distingushed Professor and chair of the Gillings School’s epidemiology department. “The award is a great honor for Vic and the department.”

ACE was established in 1979 to develop criteria for professional recognition of epidemiologists and to address their professional concerns. The prestigious annual award honors Lilienfeld, a founder of the organization and a renowned teacher and scholar.

Gillings School alumna Dr. Michele R. Forman, distinguished professor and head of Purdue University’s Department of Nutrition Science, also received an award at the ACE annual meeting. Dr. Forman, who earned master’s and doctoral degrees from the Gillings School, was presented with a Special Award for Epidemiologic Research on Critical and Sensitive Windows for Health Across the Lifespan.
