UNC Study: Screening Decisions Must Balance Potential Benefits with Potential Patient Harms

Screening to detect medical conditions has become standard practice for many diseases, but insufficient attention has been paid to the potential for harm, according to a study conducted at the University of North Carolina. The study, published online in The Journal of the American Medical Association – Internal Medicine, was co-authored by several UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health researchers, including Dr. Russell P. Harris, adjunct professor of epidemiology; Dr. Maihan B. Vu, adjunct assistant professor of health behavior; Dr. Carol E. Golin, and Dr. Noel Brewer, associate professors of health behavior; and Dr. Jessica T. DeFrank, postdoctoral fellow in health behavior.
