The Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, School of Medicine (SOM), is seeking a chairperson for the department of preventive medicine and biostatistics (PMB). The department of PMB is one of the largest departments within the SOM, and its standing reflects the prominence of public health in the missions of the Department of Defense (DoD), United States Public Health Service (USPHS), and the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS).
Duties: The incumbent serves as the chairperson of PMB and chief executive of a combined clinical medicine and basic science department, and as such will be responsible for both its operation and the quality of its activities and products. In coordination with other faculty members of the SOM, and with the approval of the dean SOM, plans, develops, and executes relevant elements of the medical school curriculum germane to the disciplines encompassed in the department. Additional responsibilities include providing a productive and meaningful learning environment for the students by continually evaluating and revising the curriculum as needed; coordinating with the dean, the associate dean for medical education, and the chairs of other clinical and basic science departments of the SOM to determine the variety and scope of instructional techniques to be used such as lectures, discussions, laboratory exercises, seminars, conferences, audio-visual media, and computer-assisted problems appropriate to accomplish learning objectives.
