Restrictions on price discounting and cigarette coupons were keys to innovative tobacco policies in Providence, RI, according to a new study from the Brown School, Washington University in St. Louis. The study was led in part by the Center for Public Health Systems Science, funded by the National Cancer Institute and published by the Center on October 10. In February 2012, Providence passed ordinances that cracked down on price discounts and other tactics used by tobacco companies. The ordinances were upheld September 30, 2013 by the 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. “Providence was one of the first cities in the United States to pass ordinances to regulate price discounting and coupon redemption,” said Dr. Douglas A. Luke, director of the Center and principal investigator. “This is a great public health victory.”
