Dr. Joel Kaufman and Dr. Howard Frumkin from the University of Washington School of Public Health have been elected to the Washington State Academy of Sciences for their outstanding record of scientific achievement. They are among 13 new members, including six from the University of Washington, who will be inducted next month in Seattle.

Dr. Kaufman is interim dean of the University of Washington School of Public Health and professor of environmental and occupational health sciences, epidemiology and general internal medicine. In a statement released July 26, the academy described Dr. Kaufman as “a public health leader in the field of air quality,” whose “research illustrates the impact of air pollution as a major contributor to cardiovascular disease.”

Dr. Frumkin, professor of environmental and occupational health sciences, “is one of the nation’s leading environmental public health thinkers,” the academy wrote. “He established the CDC’s climate change program and was one of the first to call attention to the health impact of climate change.”

Additionally, Dr. Shirley Beresford, senior associate dean of the School, was elected by current members of the academy to the organization’s board. Dr. Beresford, a professor of epidemiology and adjunct professor of health services, was inducted to academy in 2015.

Dr. Kaufman and Dr. Frumkin will be inducted on Sept. 14 at the Museum of Flight. They will be honored for their willingness to work on behalf of the academy and to bring “the best available science to bear on issues within the state of Washington,” according to the academy.
