Washington Research Explores Successful Nutrition Policy Strategies

Unlikely allies should consider forming strategic partnerships based on shared values to create successful nutrition policy agendas, according to a study led by the University of Washington School of Public Health. Dr. Donna Johnson, professor of health services at the School of Public Health’s Center for Public Health Nutrition, and fellow authors concluded that collaboration on policy initiatives is more likely when there are some shared values and goals. An example is Washington state’s 2008 Local Farms-Healthy Kids Act, which sought to make it easier for schools to buy locally grown food and low-income families to buy at farmers markets.
