Washington State Pay for Performance Program Did Not Affect Quality of Care

Pay for performance is an important element in current health care reform efforts. However, a large-scale, state-wide, pay-for-performance program among physician group practices in Washington State found no significant positive effect on general clinical quality. The results were published in the December issue of Healthcare: The Journal of Delivery Science and Innovation. The lead author was Dr. Douglas Conrad, professor of health services in the University of Washington School of Public Health.
