Washington Study Finds Dementia Linked to Blood Sugar Level, Even Without Diabetes

Higher blood glucose levels are associated with a greater risk for dementia, even among people without diabetes, according to a study by the University of Washington Schools of Public Health and Medicine, Group Health Research Institute, and others. Previous studies have linked diabetes to dementia. In this study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, researchers looked at data from more than 2,000 patients age 65 and older from Group Health Cooperative, a health care system in Washington State. About a quarter of the patients developed dementia over a median follow-up of 6.8 years.
