A manuscript about breast cancer screening messages written by an MPH student at the Brown School, Washington University in St. Louis, has won the 2014 Frank Prize in Public Interest Communications Research from the University of Florida. The study tested the effectiveness of breast cancer survivor stories and how African-American women processed the messages in the stories. The study found that when the narratives induced sadness, listeners were more likely to get screened, while fear inhibited them doing so.
