WIHS Findings Studied by UAB to Evaluate Sequence Variants in RYR3 Gene

Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the Ryanodine receptor 3 (RYR3) gene that encodes a calcium channel are associated with common carotid intima media thickness (cIMT), a valid and reliable subclinical measure of atherosclerosis in HIV-infected individuals. Dr. Sadeep Shrestha, associate professor, and Ms. Aditi D. Shendre, doctoral candidate, in the department of epidemiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, evaluated SNPs in the RYR3 gene among HIV-infected women participating in Women's Interagency HIV Study (WIHS). Co-investigators include Dr. Ryan Irvin, assistant professor, and Dr. Howard W. Wiener, statistician II, also in UAB’s department of epidemiology; Dr. Ana I. Vázquez and Dr. Degui Zhi, assistant professors in the department of biostatistics, section on statistical genetics; Dr. Nita A. Limdi, associate professor in the department of neurology; and WIHS investigators.
